Here at the house it is a blessed time when our girls give birth to a new litter of puppies.  As the days progress toward the day of birth, there is anticipation as to how many babies will be delivered, and whether they will be boys or girls.  We have asked ourselves, "how can we tell these puppies apart after they are born?"  So, we set in motion a process at whelping time to accurately describe each puppy, writing down the markings, color, and sex of each one.  We also weigh each puppy and keep an accurate chart of the growth of each one that has been born.  If there is a loss of weight, we know to pay close attention to that individual puppy and make sure that he is getting enough nursing time on "Mom."  If the litter is too large, we might have to supplement to help feed one or more puppies.

It doesn't take very long with extra help to put this puppy back into the pack (litter) fending for himself.

As they begin to grow you can see the puppies taking on different characteristics.  You may find the little guy that is the "go-getter."  You may find "Mr. Big" who is a pig at the feeding table rolling over all the others just to get something to eat.  Then there may be a shy one that sits over in the corner, watching life unfold in front of him.  Each one has his own personality, unique to himself.  As they get older they seem to begin looking all alike.  We then mark each of the puppies with a different colored collar or some other method we know that will help us remember each one.  As we watch and observe we begin to know what type of personality each puppy has.

Then, when we have an inquiry about a puppy we can tell which one might work best in a given family circumstance, and will most likely be all that their family has hoped.
